Meet the artist.
Zovina Maria is a whimsical fantasy artist from England, specialising in highly detailed, hand-crafted Polymer Clay Paintings. Zovina sculpts tiny portals transporting us to worlds of peace, calm and magic. Known for her depictions of mushrooms, fairy-winged animals, and her glistening use of light, these pieces are unique one-of-a-kind treasures, here to remind us of a world of joy and rest.
How it all started
The Miniature Paintings were born out of pure experimentation. I have known I wanted to be an artist since I was a little child, and this ethereal essence has been with me since day one. After graduating art school I wondered what path I wanted to take to be a full time artist and make my dream a reality.
I stumbled across this medium, polymer clay, for the first time in 2021 and began to play and experiment. I started off creating shimmering floral jewellery, however, after a month or so I felt bored and unstimulated. I really missed creating things with narrative, as I was coming from a painting and children’s book illustrator background. So one day I thought “I wonder if I can paint but with the clay?” And so off I went, merging all my experience, knowledge and passions together. And thus, the very first Miniature Clay Painting was born. It was awful. But I tried again, and the second one I made was AMAZING! I was in awe at what I had just created, it felt like a gift from God. Something I could never have come up with on my own without all the moments of my life coming together and blooming into something unique and entirely new.
The Creative Process
Each piece is 100% hand-sculpted out of polymer clay, every detail is placed down with gentle care. I love to hand mix my clay colours from scratch so I have more control over the atmosphere and harmony within the clay paintings.
Each gold or silver frame is also hand-sculpted. So in the end, you have a unique piece of art that has taken form from a few balls of clay, into tiny miniature worlds.
The Meaning
I have always been fascinated with the natural world. How no two flowers or mountains are the same, yet at the same time, there are clear patterns and signatures all around. It is a quiet mystery. My artwork reveals how I see the world, though our world is far from perfect, my eyes can’t help but rest on its gentle beauty and the quiet perfection of Mother Earth. There is a place in my heart that feels like Home, it’s a world of peace and unity, I know in my soul it exists somewhere. So I’ll depict this in my artwork, in these tiny worlds of gentle peace and magic!
